This site is for individuals and community partners engaged with North Island College (NIC) Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) practicums.

The ECCE Department is grateful to the Early Learning Programs who partner with us to support the learning of the students.  We are committed to the principles of the BC Early Learning Framework (BCELF), and believe that each practicum placement is unique and offers an opportunity for students to examine various ways of being an educator.  The BCELF shares with us that there is no prescribed, right way of working with children and families, and that as educators our approaches should be rooted in the context of our communities (Province of BC, 2019).  We hope that the assignments we have created offer room for students to engage in contextual learning within all program philosophies and pedagogical approaches.

With humility, we acknowledge the territories of the combined 35 First Nations of the Nuu-chah-nulth, Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish peoples, on which NIC’s campuses are situated. As early childhood educators we understand that we are implicated in the systemic injustices that continue to privilege particular voices and marginalize others, and we take seriously our obligations to disrupt colonial legacies in educational practice.

We are grateful for the funding support of BC Campus to create this website and other resources.
